Why Believe In Jesus? Isn’t Jesus a myth or if he did exist so what?

Jesus is not a myth.

Bart Ehlman is the James A. Gray Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and is a leading authority on the Bible and the life of Jesus. He is not a believer in Jesus. That is he does not claim to be a Christian. He wrote the book titled “Did Jesus Exist? The Historical Argument for Jesus of Nazareth.”
Ehrman goes on in his book to prove using scholarly historical methods that Jesus did exist. His last words in his conclusion are

“I refuse to sacrifice the past in order to promote the worthy cause of my own social and political agendas. No one else should either. Jesus did exist, whether we like it or not.”

Why then does it matter that Jesus exists?

Jesus is the founder of Christianity. What we know of Jesus comes from the Old Testament and New Testament of the Bible. In the Old Testament, a savior was prophesied to come. He was called the Messiah or the Christ.
All that we know of Jesus has been written down by His disciples or followers in the New Testament. They spent some three years with Jesus while he was on earth. They observed his multiple miracles. He taught them and showed them what they were to be and do. They were men whom Jesus hand picked to carry on his message and work. The message was revolutionary. Jesus Christ rose from the dead! What did he tell his disciples? Here is part of what he said,

Luke 24: 36 As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate before them. 44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

Why believe in Jesus? Because if we do, the major problem we have–our sin–will be forgiven.
